When his grandfather dies smiling beside the river after twenty years of silent watching, young Aruni leaves the Sindhu valley carrying the only thing the old man left behind: a small clay disc, blank on both faces and worn smooth by a lifetime of one thumb.

Aruni follows the road west through mountains, ancient settlements, fires tended across generations, crowded cities and a devastating flood. Along the way he meets people who offer very different answers to the questions he carries.

Yet the farther he travels, the less certain he becomes that an answer is something that can simply be found.
