Description

Some conversations come easy; some are hard; some never take place.

The poems contained in this volume are conversations often overlooked in the hurry and bluster of life.
These poems are for people who have seen struggle from up close, and for those who have never had to; for people who love poetry, and for those who wonder and doubt; for people who think the healthcare system is fatally flawed, and for those who serve in the system with dedication and love.
These poems are for you...

Readers review InVerse Medicine

“...this collection evokes a tantalising possibility of what the specific location of identities, between or through medicine and literature, can illuminate for us... We are reading this book during a global health catastrophe that has no precedent in our lifetimes for its spread and devastation. Our reading can thus attune us to how poetry listens, speaks and heals with empathy, and Dhaliwal crafts each poem with this explicit tenor.”

“InVerse Medicine delights even as it devastates, recalling poignant encounters and humane moments in the practice of medicine. It is a compilation of poems written at different points in the author’s life, coming together seamlessly as a highly readable and evocative collection.”

About the Author

Upreet Dhaliwal is a retired Director-Professor who spent decades at the University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi, India. She trained as an ophthalmologist, and spent the happiest years of her life as one.

When she became a medical teacher in 1994, it added value to her life, but things got vastly more interesting when she (re)discovered the humanities. Bringing the humanities into health professions education has been a source of great joy and learning, and much of her latest work has centered around poetry, narratives, and Theatre of the Oppressed as applied to health professions education.

She is a fierce champion of the humanities in medicine and believes that they are key to reminding people of their - and others' - humanity. She is Editor of a health humanities journal called Research & Humanities in Medical Education - or RHiME. RHiME is an online-only, open-access, peer-reviewed journal (www.rhime.in). Initiated in 2014, it is still going strong thanks to the selfless effort of a handful of fabulous people and practically no finances.
