The poems contained in this volume are conversations we could easily overlook in our rush to provide care.

Through poetry, I explore what it really means to be sick, and what it means to be a provider, or a caregiver.

These poems are for people who have ever been unwell, and for those who have never been sick; for people who love poetry, and for those who wonder and doubt; for people who think the healthcare system is fatally flawed, and for those who serve in the system with dedication and love.

The book is for learners of the healthcare professions, just as much as it is for teachers and practitioners.

These poems are for you...

About the Author

Upreet Dhaliwal is a retired Director-Professor who spent decades at the University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi, India. She trained as an ophthalmologist, and spent the happiest years of her life as one.

When she became a medical teacher in 1994, it added value to her life, but things got vastly more interesting when she (re)discovered the humanities. Bringing the humanities into health professions education has been a source of great joy and learning, and much of her latest work has centered around poetry, narratives, and Theatre of the Oppressed as applied to health professions education.

She is a fierce champion of the humanities in medicine and believes that they are key to reminding people of their - and others' - humanity. She is Editor of a health humanities journal called Research & Humanities in Medical Education - or RHiME. RHiME is an online-only, open-access, peer-reviewed journal ( Initiated in 2014, it is still going strong thanks to the selfless effort of a handful of fabulous people and practically no finances.
