Description

"The Presentation", revolves around five law students who are preparing a report on an age old open and shut murder which they have to present in their class. Ravi casually suggests that the offender, Richard Bagwell, might have been framed. Each of them looks into the case with their own perspective and soon discover that there is more to the case than meets the eye. They dwell deeper into the case and their suspicion grows with it. The five friends come up with various interesting theories, make some mysterious discoveries and also get emotionally attached to the people involved in that case.
What started as a boring case report becomes a challenge to them, who imagine themselves fighting for the offender who was sentenced to death for a crime he might not have committed. Eventually they solve the mystery in the case which had remained unnoticed for several decades. A bigger dilemma presents to them now that they have to decide whether or not to reveal their findings in their presentation. It is a dilemma which many students can relate to, suppressing their innovative ideas or invention for the sake of good grades.
The story involves a combination of seriousness and humour, guile and honesty. The five of them lose themselves in a century old turn of events in search of a hidden mystery.

excerpt-
Ravi heard his door opening slowly from the outside. He heard the key being removed from the knob. He hesitantly said “Who…Who is that?” His heart suddenly started beating faster as he saw him, he tried to run but his legs held him back and he started to sweat at the sight of the pistol pointing at him. He stammered some words but he knew it wouldn’t matter. The clock showed 7:20.
Kishore was walking up and down the hallway. The decision was not made and the time was running out. He was tired and wanted to sleep but it was still 7:20pm.
Neha dropped her knife when she heard a loud noise. She was scared to go out and find out. She ran to her brother to see if he was safe. “10 more minutes” she said, “Its 7:20”.

Re: THE PRESENTATION

The Presentation is a well narrated murder drama, thats presented through conversations of the characters who decide to relive a case for one of their law school course's case studies. The plot on the whole revolves around a bunch of law students preparing to give a presentation on a case study for one of their classes. The characters analyze the case from their own perspectives, jumping into the shoes of the victims and perpetrators of the case. The narration presents the reader with clues to try and guess what actually happened on the night of the murder, while providing a completely unexpected turn to the picture as the novel progresses. Apologies for not giving away any more details of the plot, go on and read the book to find out more. The reading experience is engaging at every step of the book. The author has managed to keep the reader engrossed throughout the novel, while keeping the language simple enough for the average reader. This novel alludes to the general mentality of students these days when it comes to any assignment, and how students these days are mainly concerned about minimizing effort while maximizing marks they get rather than putting in their best efforts, to actually understand and internalize the material given to them. This novel while on the face value is a fun murder mystery thriller, calls to attention the need to rethink the learning process and how both students and teachers need to shift the focus from mere results to fruitful learning which is the true purpose of education. Kudos to Vikas Rao for presenting this unspoken problem through "The Presentation". This is a story that every student should read and reflect on, to see where exactly we are going with our approach to learning.
