The creation of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India has asserted a new era of
autonomous administration for the tribal people in the North-East India. The Sixth
Schedule under Articles 244(2) and 275(1) to the Constitution of India contains certain
provisions with reference to the administration of the tribal areas in North-East India.
Therefore, under the Sixth Schedule, the hill districts were given autonomous legislative,
judicial, and executive bodies, called “District Councils” and “Regional Councils” with
power to manage all affairs pertaining to the welfare of the tribal people.
