Rohingya people have been persecuted by the ruling Myanmar junta for decades. The decade-long torture and humiliation resulted in a huge influx of the Rohingya people from Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh.
As a local from Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, I started working with different news and humanitarian agencies as a translator, interpreter, and transcriber. During my early translation career, I myself fought a lot, as the Rohingya language is not 100% the same as my mother tongue, the Chittagonian language. There are similarities in terms of listening, but speaking, writing, and reading, and during translation of critical texts or audio voices, I fought a lot. I started developing small notebooks on the language. After 4 years of collecting words, terms, and terminologies, I published the dictionary.
I worked with Handicap International, the Danish Refugee Council, Social Impact, and MSF as a translator and interpreter.
I hope this book will play a role in protecting the Rohingya language as well as promoting it on the international stage.
