Description

Above Down Inside Out: Innate Intelligence Within You

"The correction happens at my hands. The healing was always yours."

Most people think a chiropractor simply cracks backs for pain relief. This book explains what the profession actually claims — and what it has never claimed.

Drawing on nearly thirty years of clinical practice, Dr. Jiro Yamahata walks readers through the real history, philosophy, and mechanics of chiropractic care: how a specific, correctable interference in the nervous system differs from the vague, dramatic image so much of social media has built around this profession.

In this book, you'll learn:

What chiropractic actually is — and how specific correction differs from general spinal manipulation

Why the sound an adjustment makes has nothing to do with whether it worked, and why "louder" or "harder" is not "more effective"

Why chiropractic was never a medical degree, and what it means when a practitioner claims otherwise

The anatomy and neurophysiology behind spinal function, explained in plain language

What the Vertebral Subluxation Complex actually is — and isn't

Why regular spinal checkups matter even when nothing hurts

How functional testing — leg length analysis, manual muscle testing — locates a true cause rather than just an effect, including why a curved spine is often the result, not the source, of the problem

The history of D.D. and B.J. Palmer, told honestly, including where the founding story is thinner than the legend

Universal Intelligence, Innate Intelligence, Above-Down Inside-Out, the Safety Pin Cycle, and the Meric System — chiropractic's core philosophy, explained and connected to modern neuroscience

Real patient cases spanning infancy to old age — colic, migraines, pregnancy, athletic injury, and balance in the elderly

Why movement, sleep, and nutrition determine whether a correction actually holds

How to tell a qualified, specific practitioner from a performer

This is not a technical manual for professionals, and it is not a substitute for medical care. It is a plain-spoken, honest guide for patients and families who want to understand what they're actually receiving before anyone touches their spine — including two forms of misinformation about chiropractic that circulate widely online, and the tools to recognize them.

Above all, this book asks one thing of its reader: trust that your body, once whatever is interfering with it is removed, already knows how to heal.

Jiro Yamahata
President of PALMS CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE, Osaka, Japan. He has worked in clinical practice and education for more than twenty-five years, treating patients across every stage of life. He is also the author of the companion volume on cranial osteopathy, The Quiet Rhythm Within. He practices alongside his wife, treating patients together as the foundation of their daily clinical work.

About the Authors

Jiro Yamahata, BCSc., is the founder of Palms Chiropractic College, Japan, established in 2003, an institution dedicated to the disciplined study and application of true chiropractic principles. A graduate of ITM Melbourne and ICC Japan, he holds a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and is registered in Japan.

For more than a quarter of a century, he has engaged in the practical and philosophical pursuit of chiropractic, not merely as a method, but as a distinct science of life governed by laws that operate from above-down, inside-out. His work emphasizes precision, specificity, and the restoration of normal function through the correction of vertebral subluxation, rather than the treatment of disease itself.

Through decades of clinical practice and instruction, he has carried this message across Japan, India, Nepal, Malaysia, South Korea, Bangladesh, and Turkey, contributing to the advancement of chiropractic education and the cultivation of skilled practitioners. His teaching reflects a steadfast commitment to the foundational principles of the profession, harmonized with contemporary clinical understanding.

He continues to advocate for a chiropractic approach that does the least to achieve the most, honoring the inherent intelligence of the body while advancing the art, science, and philosophy of chiropractic for future generations.
