Hailed from the Malwa belt of Punjab, Kavishri is simple spoken thoughts in various metrical poetry. It is a vibrant and expressive genre that combines poetry, and social commentary. Kavishri is a revolving around malwa and took inspiration from various other folk genres such as epic-play, epithalamiums, etc while being an independent poetry form. As malwa grew, new meters and themes of kavishri, made it the closest popular literature to the high Literature of Punjabi as said by Dr. Vanjara Bedi. It was not considered as high literature.
