Description

Hailed from the Malwa belt of Punjab, Kavishri is simple spoken thoughts in various metrical poetry. It is a vibrant and expressive genre that combines poetry, and social commentary. Kavishri is a revolving around malwa and took inspiration from various other folk genres such as epic-play, epithalamiums, etc while being an independent poetry form. As malwa grew, new meters and themes of kavishri, made it the closest popular literature to the high Literature of Punjabi as said by Dr. Vanjara Bedi. It was not considered as high literature. But, We found kavishri of lakha singh akkanwali(posthumously), some verses whose, hold the concepts of meaning creation(maani-afreeni) and paronomasia(riaayat-lafzi) of Urdu literary theory along with proprietary (auchitya) and deviant-utterance (vakrata) of Indian literary theory, gives kavishri a new possibility to stand out in the realm of high literature of Punjabi. We are publishing his kavishri in 7 volumes and here's the first volume of his work. We also discuss the relevance of kavishri in contemporary Punjabi songs that are inclined to the Western hip-hop genre, Which bridges the gap between commercial lyricism and high literature in upcoming volumes. Findings are aimed at reviving the aesthetics of the countryside of Punjab and old idioms in contemporary writings.

Author Description:

Lakha Singh Akkanwali, a stalwart of the Indian Army hailing from the serene village of Akkanwali nestled in the heart of Punjab's Malwa belt, emerges as a multifaceted figure embodying the essence of both military valor and literary prowess. His life, spanning the tumultuous decades from the 1920s to the 1950s, bore witness to the rich tapestry of Punjab's cultural landscape, where his passion for both martial duty and poetic expression flourished.

Akkanwali's journey through life, deeply entrenched in the ethos of rural Punjab, is a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people. As a soldier in the Indian Army, he exemplified courage and resilience, navigating the complexities of his era with unwavering dedication. However, it is in the realm of literature, particularly in the poetic genre of Kavishri, where Akkanwali's legacy truly shines.

Kavishri, a form of poetic expression intricately woven into the fabric of Punjab's cultural heritage, serves as a conduit for the articulation of social commentary and introspection. Rooted in the vernacular traditions of Malwa, Kavishri finds resonance in the everyday lives of its people, offering a platform for both artistic expression and cultural reflection.

The true magnitude of Lakha Singh's literary prowess, however, came to light posthumously, through the tireless efforts of Akashdeep Singh. In a testament to the enduring legacy of his work, Akashdeep painstakingly curated and compiled seven volumes of Lakha Singh's Kavishri, a testament to their enduring relevance and literary merit.
