Description

For generations, Sindhi cooking was never measured in grams or recorded in written volumes. It existed as a living art—passed down through sight, aroma and the intuitive touch of home cooks. When the Partition of 1947 severed a people from their ancestral land along the Indus, they carried their heritage in memory alone, rebuilding their lives and their kitchens across new borders and far-flung diaspora communities.
The Sindhi Cuisine Cookbook: Heirloom Recipes, Rituals and Remembrance bridges the gap between memory and the modern kitchen, documenting this rich heritage before it is lost to time. Equal parts practical cookbook and cultural archive, this collection offers an intimate entry point into one of South Asia’s most distinctive yet under-documented culinary landscapes.

Inside the Book
• 42 Foundational Heirloom Recipes: Divided across five distinct chapters, guiding readers from the comforting rituals of the traditional breakfast table and essential everyday dals to elaborate festive feasts of meat and fish, concluding with rich, ceremonial sweets.
• 5 Immersive Cultural Essays: Insightful deep dives exploring the geographical influence of the Indus River, the sacred rhythms of Sindhi festivals, legendary textile traditions like Ajrakh and Ralliand the global diaspora’s enduring relationship with food.
• A Dual Experience: Designed to serve as a reliable, working kitchen guide for contemporary cooks while standing as a moving testament to cultural survival, identity and memory.

About the Author

Naresh Rijhwani spent over four decades as a distinguished structural engineer, leading the design and execution of major industrial and infrastructure projects. Upon stepping back from engineering, he applied that same precision and devotion toward preserving something far more personal: the culinary heritage, sacred rituals and living memory of his Sindhi roots.
Born into a Sindhi Hindu family tracing its ancestry to Larkana and Sukkur, Sindh, Naresh grew up in a home where cooking was an intuitive language, passed down through generations without a single recipe written on paper. Preserving this oral tradition became the foundation for his ongoing Sindhi Heritage Series.
He is the author of Echoes of Sindhi Heritage, a celebrated collection of cultural essays and writes regularly on Sindhi history, festivals and folk traditions. The Sindhi Cuisine Cookbook marks a deeply personal milestone in this journey—a project born from a heartfelt promise to his late wife, Neelam and brought to fruition with the encouragement of his son, Dushyant.
Naresh writes from Gurugram, India, driven by the conviction that a civilization’s most intimate inheritance—its food—must be documented on purpose, before it is lost to time.
