Description

We are taught that conflict happens to us. The harder truth is that it begins within us.

Every war, every rivalry, every broken relationship begins with the same human forces: the desire for more and the pursuit of dominance. In Beyond Boundaries, Pramod Bhatt traces these forces across history, psychology, economics, and geopolitics, revealing how the same dynamics that fracture families also fracture nations.

Bhatt writes from rare authority. In 1999, he commanded an infantry company at 17,000 feet in the Kargil War, greeted on arrival not with salutes but with shellfire.

He then spent over two decades as a multinational crisis executive, leading enterprise responses to the Mumbai attacks, the Fukushima disaster, COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the wars among Iran, Israel, and the United States, including coordinating a high-risk civilian extraction from Russian-occupied territory. From the battlefield to the boardroom, he kept finding the same pattern: an Internal Spark of unchecked desire igniting an Engine of Dominance.

Inside, you’ll discover:
• Why enough never feels like enough, from the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda to the dopamine-driven algorithms in your pocket
• How the struggle for dominance drove empires from Rome to today’s global powers, and where it’s headed next: trade wars, AI races, and cyber warfare
• How media and technology amplify our hunger and quietly weaponize influence
• The Universal Conflict Resolution Framework (UCRF) and the Global Conflict Resilience Index (GCRI): practical tools for resolving conflict at every scale, applied to real-world conflicts, including the Russia–Ukraine war
• The Sufficiency Check: the simple, powerful question that interrupts the cycle before it begins

For readers of Sapiens and The Changing World Order.

And it doesn’t stop at the page. The book’s frameworks power SHANTIUM (shantium.com), an AI enabled conflict-resolution tool that helps you analyze and find a path to resolution for any conflict you face, whether Interpersonal, Organizational, Community, or Geopolitical.

About the Author

Pramod Bhatt has spent his career at the intersection of conflict, crisis, and decision-making, first as a soldier and then as a corporate executive guiding organizations through some of the most consequential geopolitical events of the past two decades. He has witnessed conflict from the front lines, the crisis room, and the boardroom; this book is his account of the forces that connect them.

Born in the Himalayan town where boundaries meant nothing more than the ridgelines between streams, he was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1998 and posted to Kargil at 17,000 feet. In the 1999 Kargil War, he commanded an infantry company and earned the Operation Vijay Star. The book’s question took shape there: why do we fight so fiercely over ground where life can barely survive?

He carried that question into the corporate world, where the same forces of desire and dominance reappeared. As a security executive spanning Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Russia, he led crisis response for the Russia–Ukraine and Iran–Israel–US wars and established resilience standards for 100,000+ employees. Earlier, as an intelligence executive at a global bank, he supported decision-making during the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Fukushima disaster, and the H1N1 pandemic.

From this vantage point emerged a conviction that runs throughout the book: conflict, from a quarrel between neighbors to a war between nations, is driven by recurring forces, and resolving it is a learnable, structured, and measurable discipline, not an art reserved for the gifted few. This conviction underlies the book’s core frameworks – the Internal Spark, the Engine of Dominance, the Adaptive Desire, the Universal Conflict Resolution Framework, and the Global Conflict Resilience Index – as well as Shantium, an AI-enabled conflict resolution tool built to apply them.

An alumnus of IE University and IIM Ahmedabad, he was named Security Professional of the Year and addressed INTERPOL, ASIS International, and the U.S. State Department’s OSAC. He lives in France.
