Description

This book is a collection of original dance compositions created in the classical tradition suited for South Indian dance forms, written under the pen name "Neela Rama." Drawing on a background in Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music, the author has composed items across the full range of traditional forms in a Margam — Pushpanjali, Jatiswara, Swarabhoomike, Swara Kavya, Shabda, Kritis, Dharu Varna, Pada Varna, Swarajati, Padam, Javali, and Thillana — including two original creations, the Swarabhoomike and the Swara Kavya.
Each item is presented with lyrics in simple English Roman transliteration for easy pronunciation, and for the more complex forms (Varna, Swarajati, Padam, and Javali), the original-language lyrics are included alongside line-by-line gloss meanings — set out in the same sequence as the dance gestures — as well as complete translations, making the compositions accessible to performers seeking a deeper understanding of the text.
Many of the pieces are also tied to specific deities from historical temples across Karnataka, inviting dancers to research and reflect the temples' historical significance through their performance — treating dance itself as a form of visual documentation. The compositions span multiple languages, including Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit, and Hindi. The book is intended as both a performance resource and a musical offering.

About the Author

Praveen Markandachari is a distinguished artist whose journey spans over 25 years of dedicated practice in the twin classical art forms of Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music. His artistic sensibilities have been shaped under the guidance of two eminent gurus — Dr. Lalitha Srinivasan of the Mysore School, and the late Sangeeta Kalacharya Neela Ramgopal in Carnatic music — both of whom recognized his gift for composition and encouraged him to pursue it as a distinct creative path.
A recipient of a Master's degree in Dance and holder of a Vidwat certificate, Praveen's scholarship is matched by his artistry: he is an Empaneled Artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), a recognition reserved for performers who represent India's cultural heritage on national and international platforms. Over the years, this rare confluence of movement and music has flowered into a prolific compositional practice, with Praveen having authored over 400 kritis — a body of work that reflects both discipline and deep artistic instinct.
Continuing to compose with the same passion that first drew his gurus' encouragement, Praveen Markandachari stands today as a torchbearer of a tradition he has spent a quarter-century mastering — and continues, with each new composition, to enrich.
