This is a story about three women, but most of these pages belong to my mother.
​My grandmother was the woman who came before her. I am the woman who came after her. But my mother was the first woman I ever knew.
​From the moment I opened my eyes, she was there. She was the first woman I observed, the first woman I admired, and the first woman whose life I unknowingly began learning from.
​I have lived beside her. I have watched her. I have heard her stories. I have seen the woman she became and tried to understand the girl she once was.
​That is why this book belongs to three women, but its heart belongs to her.
