In Vedic Astrology, Ashtakavarga is a highly specific and objective predictive technique that mathematically quantifies the strength of planets and houses. Rather than relying solely on subjective interpretations, it uses a point-based system (known as bindus or benefic dots) to predict the exact timing of life events, career success, and financial prosperity.
The Mechanism of Ashtakavarga: Ashtakavarga literally translates to "eight divisions." It maps the interactions of the 7 classical planets (excluding the shadow nodes, Rahu and Ketu) plus the Ascendant (Lagna).
Calculation: For each of the 12 zodiac signs, an astrologer evaluates where each planet sits relative to the other planets and the Ascendant.
Points: If a planet is in an auspicious position regarding another, it contributes a positive point (bindu), up to a maximum of 8 points per house.
Sarvashtakavarga (SAV): When the points from all 7 planets are added together for a specific house, the total is called the SAV score. A score above 28 generally indicates strength, while a score below indicates weakness or required effort.

Traditional transit readings only look at how a transiting planet relates to your natal Moon. Ashtakavarga is vastly more precise because it calculates how a transiting planet interacts with all the planets in your chart. For example, if a "malefic" planet like Saturn transits a house with 35 points, it rarely causes harm and can actually yield positive results.
Timing Dasha (Planetary Periods) Results: Astrologers use Ashtakavarga to determine whether a specific Dasha (major planetary period) will be prosperous. Even if the Dasha lord is naturally considered "malefic," if the sign it is placed in has 5 or more benefic points, the period can yield immense success, wealth, or career growth.
Evaluating House Strengths (Bhinnashtakavarga): This system helps identify which areas of life will naturally flourish and which will require hard work. For example, a high point score in the 10th house (career) points to natural leadership and easy professional advancement, whereas a low score in the 4th house (property/happiness) implies a native may need to put in extra effort to buy real estate.
