Description

Daughter of Malkin Tower follows Philomena, born into Lancashire's infamous Chattox witch lineage and abandoned as an infant near the ruin that gave the Pendle witch trials their name. Raised by a loving farming family in ignorance of her heritage, she discovers at fifteen that she can turn invisible at will and is drawn, against her will, toward the full moon — a compulsion she learns to hide rather than understand.
Recruited into service by a socially ambitious English lord, Philomena travels to Anjengo on India's Malabar Coast, where she befriends Thomas Hargreaves, a solitary Yorkshire mathematician harboring his own family's hidden witch-blood and a genius for celestial navigation. Their voyage sets in motion a sprawling story of colonial intrigue: a matriarchal Indian queen's court under mounting East India Company pressure, a merchant's slow redemption from vanity to loyalty, a horse-trader's unshakable faith, and a Portuguese schemer's long road to true penance.
When Philomena embarks on a pilgrimage under the guidance of a Hindu teacher who helps her master her own nature, tragedy strikes — her teacher is murdered by the same exploitative occult practitioners he spent his life exposing. Grief and fear drive her home to England, where Thomas, having witnessed the human cost of empire firsthand, has already returned to pursue a Cambridge doctorate studying the moon's effect on the human mind — the scientific mirror to Philomena's own lived, embodied relationship with the same celestial body.
Their eventual reunion, a marriage built beneath the same carved village church that once nearly condemned Philomena's own bloodline, and a false accusation that tests everything the valley has learned about fear and truth, lead toward a quietly triumphant conclusion: a mother's protective ward finally understood, a missing cat's fate resolved, and a daughter who will never have to hide who she is.

About the Author

Roen Shenoi spent formative years in India and the whole of a working life in Lancashire, and drew on both in writing this novel — a story, in the author's own words, of "letting two beloved places finally speak to one another."
