You Chose This
A novella
Sankalp Mishra
A man wakes in an unfamiliar hallway with no memory of how he arrived there. A voice — patient, omniscient, and unnervingly precise — introduces itself only as the Host, and explains the terms of his confinement: at every turn, he will be offered a choice, and at every turn, the Host will already know which he intends to make.
What follows is not a conventional descent into horror, but an interrogation of the architecture of choice itself. As the protagonist moves through the house's succession of rooms — a corridor lined with the photographs of those who came before him, a table set with the small relics they left behind, a notebook filled with the handwriting of guests who tried and failed to outmaneuver their own certainty — the novel's central premise sharpens: the doors were never where the story lived. The real hinge of a life turns in its smaller, unannounced moments, long before any door is offered.
You Chose This is a work of literary horror in the tradition of metafictional unease, addressing its reader as directly as it addresses its protagonist, and asking, without ever quite answering, whether prediction and fate are the same thing — or whether the one thing no house can foresee is a person's capacity for tenderness in the dark.
