Braja-nāma-mālā - The Encyclopedia of Kṛṣṇa’s Names

This book offers an exclusive and comprehensive collection of over 1000 Names of Kṛṣṇa in Braja, carefully compiled from more than 50 Gauḍīya-Vaiṣṇava-śāstras, including the 10th canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavata. Each name is presented with an accompanying translation and reference to the verse where it can be found, along with deeper insights into the meaning of each name from the ṭīkās of the ācāryas.

The names of Kṛṣṇa are presented in different categories, such as Kṛṣṇa’s Names from the 10th canto, Kṛṣṇa’s names in connection to the place Braja itself, names in connection to certain līlās, Kṛṣṇa’s sweetest names, Kṛṣṇa’s most masculine names, Kṛṣṇa’s aiśvarya names which are given a rasik meaning, Kṛṣṇa’s most often used names in the Gauḍīya-śāstras, an elaborate explanation of the name ‘Kṛṣṇa’ from different ācāryas, and a lot more.

Additionally this book offers a complete collection of all verses that speak about the glories of the Holy Name of the Lord from the Gauḍīya-śāstras, including not only references from the Vedas, but also from other religious texts such as the Bible, Koran, and the Torah, showcasing the universal understanding in all religions, that the name(s) of God are the best and most holy jewels in this universe which have to be chanted and sing together.

This book is perfect for both adults and children. Kids can have fun exploring the different names and their beautiful meanings, while adults can delve deeper into the spiritual meanings and additional information and graphics provided in it. Each name reveals certain qualities and even some secrets about Kṛṣṇa, and most importantly, it shows the bhāva (mood) through which our ācāryas saw Kṛṣṇa.
Overall, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in Kṛṣṇa and the Sweetness of Braja. Its detailed explanations, simple and clear presentation of not only the most important and favorite names of the Gauḍīya-ācāryas, but of the hundreds of Kṛṣṇa’s names, will bring incredible nectar and new understandings about the Lord of Vraja.

nāmnām akāri bahudhā nija-sarva-śaktis

Your numerous holy names have unlimited potencies.
(Śikṣāṣṭaka 2, quoted in CC Antya 20.16 & Padyāvalī 31)

bahūni santi nāmāni rūpāṇi ca sutasya te
guṇa-karmānurūpāṇi tāny ahaṁ veda no janāḥ

Your son has many names and forms which correspond with His qualities and actions. I know them, but people do not.
(Śrīmad Bhāgavata 10.8.15)

nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ
pūrṇaḥ śuddho nitya-mukto ’bhinnatvān nāma-nāmino

The name "Kṛṣṇa" fulfills all desires like a cintāmaṇi, it is the essential form/personification of consciousness and rasa, it is perfectly complete, it is absolutely pure, it is eternally liberated, and the name is non-different to Kṛṣṇa Himself.
(Padma Purāṇa, quoted in Caitanya-caritāmṛta Madhya 17.133 & BRS 1.2.233)

kṛṣṇa-nāma, kṛṣṇa-guṇa, kṛṣṇa-līlā-vṛnda

(Caitanya-caritāmṛta Madhya 17.135)

‘hari’ ‘kṛṣṇa’ ‘nārāyaṇa’ — laile tina nāma

If you have taken the holy names 'Hari,' 'Kṛṣṇa' and 'Nārāyaṇa,' then you are very fortunate and full of punya (virtue).
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi 17.218)

nāma-jalpanāj jātayā yayā kṛpayānarho'py eṣa jantur vṛndāvane vāsyate

By the mere chanting of his names, this person resides in Vṛndāvana by His grace.

About the Author

Sītānātha was born in Switzerland in 1991, and grew up in a Christian family, in which religiosity was definitely present, but not over dominating. He is now married, has a son and lives now in Kaunas, Lithuania. In 2016, he converted to Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism. He was always fond of books, but it was the bhakti-śāstras he truly fell in love. In his free time, he spends time with his family and reading.

When asked what his favorite book is, Sītānātha would compare it to choosing from a box of chocolates - it's hard to choose.
But most likely he would choose Śrīmad Bhāgavata, Caitanya Caritāmṛta, and in particular the books from Rūpa Goswami and Raghunātha das Goswami; Bhakti-Rasāmṛta-Sindhu, Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Gaṇoddeśa Dīpikā, Vilāpa Kusumāñjali (Stavāvalī), and Govinda-līlāmṛta from Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī.
